The TUNZA Model
OUR COMMUNITY-LED CHANGE PROCESS
The TUNZA Model is our practical, child- and youth-centred approach for turning evidence into impact. “TUNZA,” meaning care and stewardship in Swahili, guides how we co-design, test, and scale solutions with communities across Tanzania. It ensures our work is safe, effective, and equitable so that children and young people can thrive.
The 5 Steps of the TUNZA Model
This community-led change model consists of five connected steps:
T – Tendaji (Practical Approach):
We tackle tough problems with practical ideas using Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) that shines a spotlight on the inherent strengths and capabilities of individuals and communities. We leverage existing trusted assets in community to develop solutions.
U – Ushirikishaji wa Jamii (Collective Social Action Model)
We drive change by uniting youth, families, communities, and systems to co-create lasting solutions. We listen, learn, and act together restoring agency, addressing root causes, embracing learning, and sustaining systemic impact through inclusive, youth-led innovation and shared accountability.
N – Nia buni hadi Kupanua (Design to Scale Process)
We learn what is really happening, then imagine different options. We test small, improve fast, and keep what works and is affordable. When ready, we grow the solution with partners across wards and districts.
Z – Zana za Utafiti → Vitendo (Research to Action Loop)
We do research while delivering services, not after. We collect quick feedback, share results openly, and learn as we go. We decide to stop, improve, or scale based on evidence and community voice.
A – Ajenda ya Usawa na Mifumo (Systems & Equity Lens)
We change the conditions that hold problems in place such as policies, practices, resources, relationships mindsets and power. We build trust and better relationships across the system. We measure who benefits and focus on those most left out.
